Let me explain to you about the Tropicana Musical!. Tropicana Musical is an all-new musical tells the story of a Las Vegas-style nightclub opening during Singapore’s swinging sixties. Based off the real-life Tropicana, a topless club and cabaret that shuttered almost 30 years ago, the musical promises to pull at your heartstrings with its mix of fun and sentimentality while exploring the individual lives of people back then. Tropicana stars the likes of Lim Yu-Beng, Brendon Fernandez and Karen Tan, and is directed by Beatrice Chia-Richmond (timeout.com, 2017).

This is one of my best memorable experience I had in Singapore so far. Hence, I wanted to blog about this even though it’s been a year already. It started in last year during April. I was eager to experience new things and meet new people in Singapore. So, I searched for Volunteer activity in SG on google, and found out this Tropicana Musical FOH volunteer wanted!. They offered selling merchandise, managing patrons and greeting guest upon arrival, taking photos and more. The complimentary is the free tickets to watch the musical!. I love to watch musical, and who doesn’t love to get the free tickets that worth $100-$200 anyway!?. So it didn’t take me decided for too long to registered for volunteering. I was volunteer about 2-3 weeks (my slots are 8 days, only 4-5 hrs a day.) Since I had pretty free schedule from school so I be able to spare my time to this volunteering.

I basically took over Merchandiser FOH roles (you can see from my picture is on the left side). The first person that I met is Melody Leong, she is the marketing team of this musical show and taught me how to do merchandising job. She briefly instructed me about the Musical Show background story and what tasks I had to do. My job was to sell their Tropical Musical Merchandise that contained iPhone cases, pouches, drawstring bags, tote bags and other accessories. Gave out the programme templates and answered enquiries. I was very enthusiastic and love to do merchandising and services job, so I had a very fun time to do this role. I sold at least $80 a day, and thanks to all the lovely guests at the show! they loved the merchandises and they was very nice towards me.

Best part of my job is that I be able to met many Singaporean celebrity and actors. The old & new celebrity, and VIP guests was invited to this show. I met Benjamin Kheng, Kheng Hua, and many honorary actors in Singapore. Both of them are so nice especially, Kheng Hua. Kheng is a producer for this Musical Show and she treated me so well. I love how she always brought the bright energy towards other people and makes people laugh & happy.

For a month as Merchandiser at Capitol Theatre, I was having so much fun and had the best time in my life. I met so many people who passionate about Musical Theatre and wanted to become actors. Most of FOH volunteer are student who study in theatre from LASALLE and a few from NAFA. So I got to know many new friends from both schools. I learnt new experiences on how to become an musical actors and how fun it is to study in this field. People there are fun, opened-mind and very cheerful. I learnt so much about doing merchandising, and work at the backstage during the show, and got to know more people who work as actors. What I impressed is that even if the people I met they'd been recognised by publicity and so successful in career, but they are all work-hard, grounded, and never underestimate other people. Instead, they always support other people. Their passions towards acting really impulse me to do my best for pursuing my dreams. Last but not least, Tropicana Musical Show was very good! Their songs are beyond beautiful and made me goosebumps!. Sadly, they didn’t release any soundtracks :(...
