Last Saturday on 21st July, I went to the school field trip with the group of my friends and lecturer, which we attended the “Free Talk : Building your brand through creative imaging and styling.” The event occurred during late afternoon from 2 – 5 pm at Orchard Link. Which I was looking forward to attend the event since Daniel Boey who known as The “Godfather of Singapore Fashion” will talks about the importance of having and developing a personal brand, and how your personal style can affect your brand. Even if the topic seems cliché at the first time you heard it, and but I would say that it’s important for you to learn and get new insight on styling & branding yourself from someone who are respected in Singapore fashion Industry. The talk includes valuable tips on the do’s and dont’s of personal styling, as well as a discussion with an established musician on their styling journey.

During the talk, Daniel mentioned several musicians who have distinctive styles and how they represent themselves through what they wearing such as David Bowie. David Bowie’s fashion is known by his iconic Aladdin Sane-era looks, he represents his own art rock music through his dramatically fashion by wearing a very flashy clothes and loud prints. Bowie’s clothes were a way of projecting self-expression, a powerful tool in communicating individuality at its most extreme, glittering and creative. And that’s what makes him memorable and loved. There’s one quote said “There’s no such thing as bad publicity!” your personal style can make you memorable. Anything that is unique will make you stand out whether it’s “good” or “bad”, this topic has been my favorite so far. As we live in the world that people always judging one’s another personality, fashion, and many more. There’re still many people out there who doesn’t have much confidence on what they wearing, or get unconfident by criticism from others. It will be good if we all embody “self-confidence” and “courage” when it comes to represent individual’s fashion, and don’t be afraid to express yourself through what you wear!

The talk guest host are not only Daniel Boey but also a famous fashion model “Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw” and Independent Musician “Houg”. Both of them have their own unique personality and distinctive styles. Which they shared their own identity in fashion, what kind of clothes they wear normally, the opinion towards fashion on social media, tips and tricks and more. For Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw, her style is define as “Sporty Sexiness” since she is very sport-enthusiast, so all her clothes will be related to fitness, that is minimal, plain, and not super bright or loud prints. When it comes to attend the events Aimee will choose the clothes according to themes but also speaks her own personality. Since she gain more than 93K followers on Instagram and many of her followers love her sporty looks, so she gave an advice that she try to maintain good social media presence and avoid to confuse the followers. She tries to maintain her sport enthusiast looks and not lean to be completely someone else, so that she won’t lose her based followers. Besides, Houg a hip hop musician shared his 80s-90s fashion inspired by bring a few pieces of his clothes. His clothes are mostly colorful, bright, quirky, and has ragtag grunge sensibility. He shared the ideas on how to styling the clothes by matching basic t-shirt with colorful blazers. In closet, we should have one statement clothes or accessories that can goes well with most of our outfits. Which is a good suggestion for those whom always wear the same basic clothes but do want to stand out.

After all, I have learnt many aspiring topic from Daniel Boey, and The guests : Aimee Bradshaw and Houg. It’s good to listened on what’s other people thinks towards fashion, how do they choose to represent themselves, and how they interpret personality into fashion. Keywords that I will keep in mind is “self-confidence” and “be unpredictable” as I want to have more confident to dress up myself and be more experimental in terms of fashion styling.
